Alcaraz and Vacherot reach Tokyo semifinals as Shapovalov retires

Top seed and defending champion Carlos Alcaraz reached the semifinals of the Japan Open, an ATP 500 hard-court event in Tokyo, on Sunday when Denis Shapovalov retired trailing 7-6(3), 2-1.

The opening set had six breaks. Each player was broken while serving for it, Shapovalov at 5-3 and Alcaraz at 6-5, before Alcaraz won the tiebreak.

Alcaraz's semifinal opponent, Jaume Munar, is a qualifier ranked 64th who beat third seed Taylor Fritz in the first round. On Sunday he won 6-4, 6-2 against Kyrian Jacquet.

Eighth seed Valentin Vacherot, the only other seed left, beat 2024 champion Arthur Fils 7-5, 4-6, 6-4. Fils broke for a 3-2 lead in the third set, but Vacherot broke back for 4-4 and again in the final game.

Vacherot's semifinal is against Jiri Lehecka, whose 6-1, 6-1 win over qualifier Adolfo Daniel Vallejo took 58 minutes.
