Sixth seed Elina Svitolina lost the first set 6-1 in her China Open opener, then won the next two against Katerina Siniakova to reach the third round in Beijing. Siniakova, a Czech Grand Slam doubles champion ranked WTA No. 55 in singles, won the opening set without facing a break point. She broke twice to lead 4-0 and won 85 percent of her first-serve points. That rate dropped to 44 percent in the second set, when Svitolina broke for 2-0 and again for 5-1. Siniakova broke back twice to get within 4-5, converting two of her eight break points in the set, but Svitolina won the next game to level the match. Siniakova did not earn a break point in the third set. Svitolina broke for 4-2 and won the last two games, though Siniakova saved one match point before the finish. It was Svitolina's third win in three meetings on record against Siniakova.
