Daria Snigur beat 14th seed Jasmine Paolini from a set down in the second round of the China Open. Paolini, the betting favorite, had a first-round bye and leaves the singles draw without a match win. Snigur, a 24-year-old Ukrainian at WTA No. 46, began the season at WTA No. 149 and reached the Prague Open final in July. Paolini won the first set after breaking for 5-3. She converted both of her break points in that set, while Snigur took one of six. The second set had four breaks in its first six games. Paolini broke for 1-0 and 3-2, and both times Snigur broke straight back. Snigur won the tiebreak 7-5, then broke for 2-1 and 4-1 in the third. Paolini got one break back for 2-4, but Snigur broke again for 5-2. Snigur earned 17 break points and broke six times. Paolini converted five of her eight break points, a higher rate from fewer than half as many chances. She won 72 percent of her first-serve points in the opening set but under half in each of the next two. Snigur had also lost the first set of her opening match against Katarzyna Kawa, then won the third 7-5. She moves into the round of 32.
