Daria Snigur came from a set down to beat Polish qualifier Katarzyna Kawa in the first round of the China Open. The two traded 12 breaks of serve, six apiece, over 2 hours and 14 minutes. Snigur is a Ukrainian who had climbed from WTA No. 149 at the start of the season to No. 46. The betting market made her an 84 percent favorite. Ranked 133rd, Kawa broke twice for a 3-0 lead and converted three of her four break points to take the opening set. Snigur broke in the first game of the second set.
