Taylor Fritz and Jaume Munar: Jaume Munar leads 1–0 across 1 recorded meeting.
Spanish qualifier Jaume Munar recovered from a set down to beat third seed Taylor Fritz in the Japan Open round of 32. Fritz, ATP No. 12 and the tournament's runner-up last year, had been a 77% favorite in the betting market. The opening set produced 14 break points, and each player converted only one. Munar broke for 3-1 and stayed a break up until the ninth game, when Fritz broke back to trail 4-5. Fritz took the set in a tiebreak, 9-7. Fritz did not break again. After the opening set, he had just two break points, both in the second set, and Munar saved them. Munar broke in the ninth game of that set for 5-4 and in the seventh game of the third for 4-3. In the decider he won 85% of his first-serve points, and Fritz never reached break point. Munar, 29, began the season at No. 38 and entered Tokyo ranked 64th. The win was his first in five matches this season against opponents ranked ninth to 16th.
