Faria, a 23-year-old from Portugal, began the season ranked 151st and came into the match at ATP No. 61, three places above Munar. They had also split two previous meetings on record. Munar, a 29-year-old Spaniard, arrived in Tokyo having won no more than one match at any of his three previous tournaments. He has already won two matches this week, the first by coming from a set down to beat last year's runner-up, Taylor Fritz.
