Iga Swiatek, the 2023 champion and No. 8 seed, began her China Open campaign with a 6-2, 6-3 second-round win over Xinyu Gao. Gao, a home player ranked 244th, had won her first-round match. Swiatek, who had a first-round bye, was playing her first hard-court match since a fourth-round loss to Qinwen Zheng at the US Open. Swiatek broke in the opening game, dropped serve for 1-1 and broke straight back for 2-1. Gao won just 31 percent of her first-serve points in the first set, and another break in the seventh game gave Swiatek a 5-2 lead. In the second set, a break in the third game put Swiatek ahead 2-1. After breaking for 1-1 in the first set, Gao did not win another game on Swiatek's serve.
