Four of the eight seeds at the ATP 500 Japan Open in Tokyo have lost their opening matches, three of them on Thursday.
The biggest exit was third seed Taylor Fritz, last year's runner-up. Qualifier Jaume Munar, ranked 64th, came from a set down to win 6-7(7), 6-4, 6-3. Fritz converted only one of eight break points, and Munar broke twice in the deciding set without facing one.
Ugo Humbert beat fifth seed Brandon Nakashima, and Luciano Darderi defeated sixth seed Casper Ruud, both in straight sets. Seventh seed Tommy Paul had gone out a day earlier, losing to Alejandro Tabilo. Second seed Frances Tiafoe advanced past wild card Kei Nishikori, while top seed and defending champion Carlos Alcaraz has yet to complete a match.
Holger Rune, in his first match on record since October 2025, lost 6-3, 6-1 to 107th-ranked Kyrian Jacquet, who never faced a break point.
At the WTA 1000 China Open in Beijing, wild card Qinwen Zheng, a US Open quarterfinalist last month, needed three sets to beat qualifier Han Shi in the first round.
