Top seed Carlos Alcaraz began his Japan Open title defense with a three-set win over Alex Michelsen in the round of 32. He lost the second set, then won the decider 6-1. Michelsen, a 22-year-old American ranked ATP No. 34, reached the US Open quarterfinals last month. Nine of the match's 11 breaks came in the first two sets. Each player broke twice in the opening set, with Michelsen converting two of seven break points. Alcaraz then won the tiebreak 7-1. In the second set, he recovered from an early break to lead 4-2, but Michelsen broke him in the seventh and ninth games and won the set to level the match. Alcaraz made the match's other two breaks early in the decider, in the second and fourth games, for a 4-0 lead. He won 73 percent of his first-serve points in that set, up from 48 percent in the second, and did not face a break point.
