·500·HardCarlos Alcaraz defeated Matteo Arnaldi 7(8)-6(6), 6-1 — Japan Open 2026 R16.
Carlos Alcaraz and Matteo Arnaldi: Carlos Alcaraz leads 3–0 across 3 recorded meetings.
Top seed and defending champion Carlos Alcaraz reached the Japan Open quarterfinals with a straight-sets win over ATP No. 37 Matteo Arnaldi of Italy. Only the first set was close. Alcaraz broke in the opening game, but Arnaldi broke back for 2-2. Neither player lost serve again before the tiebreak, which Alcaraz won 8-6. The second set was lopsided by comparison, with Alcaraz breaking in the second and fourth games to lead 4-0. Arnaldi won 71 percent of his first-serve points in the opening set but only half of them in the second. Arnaldi's returning was most productive against Alcaraz's second serve, where he won 15 of 20 points. Alcaraz landed 72 percent of his first serves, though, and won 82 percent of those. Alcaraz is now 3-0 in their meetings on record. Their 2024 meeting at Indian Wells also featured a first-set tiebreak. Arnaldi won that one, then took only one more game.
