Unseeded Zheng opens against Shi as China Open first round continues

First-round play continued Thursday at the China Open, where the seeds start in the second round. Unseeded Qinwen Zheng, a US Open quarterfinalist last month, was in the first set against Han Shi as of 11:25 a.m. local time. Three other matches were also in their opening sets, among them Sofia Kenin's meeting with Ashlyn Krueger. Paula Badosa and Daria Kasatkina are scheduled to play each other at 12:30 p.m. Polina Kudermetova, who beat Yexin Ma after dropping a first-set tiebreak, faces 32nd seed Clara Tauson in the second round.
