Hubert Hurkacz vs Denis Shapovalov — SF — Chengdu Open

Hubert Hurkacz will play for the Chengdu Open title after dropping the opening set and taking the next two against Denis Shapovalov. The semifinal between the fifth and seventh seeds ran 2 hours 26 minutes. Neither man faced a break point in the first set. Shapovalov won 86% of his first-serve points in it and came through the tiebreak to lead 7-6(8). Hurkacz never lost serve, holding all 15 of his service games. The only break points he faced, three of them, came in the third set, and he saved all three. He took three of his own five chances, breaking twice in the second set — the first in game 3 for 2-1 — and once in the third, in game 6 for 4-2. Shapovalov, ATP No. 50, hit 14 aces to Hurkacz's eight but landed only half of his first serves, and the points he won behind them fell from 86% in the opening set to 63% and 69% in the last two. He finished without converting a break point. Hurkacz has now won all three of their meetings on record. He came into the semifinal 8-9 on hard courts this season and at ATP No. 46, the high point of a year that began at No. 83.
