Alejandro Tabilo and Tommy Paul: Tommy Paul leads 2–1 across 3 recorded meetings.
Alejandro Tabilo beat seventh seed Tommy Paul in the first round of the Japan Open, dropping three games in 73 minutes. The Chilean, ranked 32nd, had lost both of their previous meetings on record. Paul's only break came in the first set and put him at 1-2, but Tabilo broke straight back for 3-1. Paul won just five of 20 points behind his second serve and double-faulted six times. Tabilo came to Tokyo 10-10 on hard courts this season. Five days earlier, he lost to Adrian Mannarino in straight sets at the Chengdu Open.
