Denis Shapovalov reached the Japan Open quarterfinals with a three-set win over Alejandro Tabilo. Each player won 91 of the 182 points. Tabilo, a Chilean ranked 31st, came in having dropped only three games against Tommy Paul in the round of 32. He broke for a 3-1 lead in the opening set, but Shapovalov broke straight back and again for 6-5 before taking the set 7-5. Seven of Shapovalov's 11 aces came in that set; Tabilo hit three in the match. The players traded breaks at the start of the second set. Tabilo then broke again for 3-1 and kept that lead to level the match. Shapovalov had three double faults in that set after none in the first. The deciding set had one break, and it went to Shapovalov. Tabilo did not convert his only break point of the set, and he saved one match point before Shapovalov converted his second. Shapovalov has now won five of his last six matches, including a run to the Chengdu Open semifinals.
