Donna Vekic, the 30th seed, opened her China Open campaign by beating Lin Zhu in three sets to reach the third round. It was Vekic's first win since the opening round of the US Open, and only her second in seven matches. Zhu is ranked WTA No. 199 and lives in Beijing. She had beaten Alycia Parks in the first round. Vekic took the opening set 6-1, and Zhu won only 27 percent of her first-serve points in it. Over the whole match, Zhu held serve just five times in 12 attempts. Vekic broke twice to lead 3-0 in the second set. Zhu then broke three times, drew level at 4-4 and took the set 6-4. Vekic hit three of her five double faults in that set. In the deciding set, Vekic broke for 3-2 and again for 5-2. Zhu had three break points in the set and won none of them.
