Naomi Osaka needed two hours to beat 20th seed Sara Bejlek in straight sets and reach the round of 16 at the China Open in Beijing. Bejlek is a 20-year-old Czech left-hander who began the season at WTA No. 93. In August she reached the Cincinnati Open semifinals, beating Aryna Sabalenka on the way. Bejlek broke for 5-3 in the opening set, but the 12th-seeded Osaka broke straight back and won the tiebreak 7-4. Osaka broke for 4-2 in the second set. Bejlek broke back in the ninth game to trail 4-5 and saved four match points in all, but Osaka still won the set 6-4. Osaka won 46 of 60 points on her first serve. Bejlek did better against Osaka's second serve, winning 17 of 27 points. Even so, she converted only two of nine break points.
