Coleman Wong

Coleman Wong Chak-lam came to tennis by accident, taking his older sister's spot in a lesson at Hong Kong's Victoria Park at age five. Born June 6, 2004, he moved with his family to Spain to train at the Rafa Nadal Academy, won junior Grand Slam doubles titles at the 2021 US Open and 2022 Australian Open, and turned pro in 2022.

The game is built around the serve. A 6-foot-3 right-hander with a two-handed backhand, the Hong Konger already owns a tour-level weapon — aces on nearly 12 percent of service points, 72.9 percent of first-serve points won — but a career winners-to-unforced ratio a shade under even marks where the ground game lags. First-strike tennis wants quick hard courts, so it tracks that every signature win on his record has come on one.

In 2025, Wong became a first twice over. At the Miami Open he beat Ben Shelton, then the ATP No. 14, 7-6(3), 2-6, 7-6(5) for the first ATP Masters 1000 match win by a Hong Kong player, and five months later his straight-sets win over Aleksandar Kovacevic at the US Open made him, as the AP reported, the first Hong Kong man to win a Grand Slam singles match in the Open era. That run reached the third round, Andrey Rublev outlasting the 21-year-old in five sets.

As of August 2026, the arc points up. Quarterfinals at his home Hong Kong Open in January and the Delray Beach Open in February set up a late-July semifinal at the Los Cabos Open, where he upset No. 12 Jiri Lehecka from a set down for the highest-ranked win of his career before Arthur Gea stopped him 7-6(7), 6-3. That week lifted him from a No. 123 season start to a career-high ATP No. 92 on August 4. A first tour-level title is still outstanding.
