Talia Gibson is into the semifinals at the Singapore Tennis Open, beating seventh seed Maria Sakkari in three sets in the quarterfinals of the WTA 250 event. The betting market had favored Sakkari at 67 percent. Gibson, ranked WTA No. 62 to Sakkari's No. 33, broke in the opening game and again in game 3 on her way to a 6-1 first set. Sakkari answered by breaking to start the second and closing it out with another break in game 10. In the decider, Gibson broke for 2-0, was broken straight back in game 3, then broke in games 4 and 6 to lead 5-1. Sakkari landed half of her first serves and held only seven of her 13 service games. Gibson converted six of her 14 break points and won 77 percent of her first-serve points. Sakkari was the better of the two behind the second serve, winning 55 percent of those points to Gibson's 31, though Gibson played only 16 second-serve points all match. The 22-year-old Australian had reached the quarterfinals without dropping a set, needing two tiebreaks to get past Viktoria Morvayova in the round of 16. She started the season at WTA No. 118 and reached the Indian Wells quarterfinals in March, beating Jasmine Paolini, then ranked No. 7, on the way.
