Hugo Gaston vs Andrey Rublev — QF — Hangzhou Open

Second-seeded Andrey Rublev is into the Hangzhou Open semifinals, but the quarterfinal against Hugo Gaston cost him two hours and 51 minutes and the opening set. Neither man was broken in that first set: Rublev hit six aces, Gaston won 95 percent of his first-serve points, and Gaston took the tiebreak. The second set was full of breaks. Rublev broke in games 1 and 3 for 3-0, Gaston broke back in game 6 for 2-4, and after Rublev broke again in game 7 for 5-2, Gaston broke in game 8 for 3-5 and again in game 10 to level at 5-5. Rublev won that tiebreak, then broke in games 2 and 4 of the decider for 4-0. Gaston won 35 percent of his first-serve points in that set. Rublev created 15 break points and converted five; Gaston took three of his six. Gaston also saved three match points. Ranked ATP No. 97, Gaston had reached the last eight by recovering from a set down against Jaime Faria, and he leaves Hangzhou having taken a set off a player the betting market made a 79 percent favorite. Rublev had won their only meeting on record, a straight-sets win at the 2025 Canadian Open. This time Gaston took him to a third set.
