Gauff beats Sun to complete the China Open's last 16, with Mertens next

Third seed Coco Gauff completed the China Open's fourth-round lineup on Monday night with a 7-5, 6-1 win over unseeded Xinran Sun. Gauff broke for 6-5 in the first set and four times in the second. Her next opponent is 13th seed Elise Mertens, whom she has beaten in all three of their meetings on record, each on a hard court. In the latest, at Dubai in February, Gauff came from a set down to win 2-6, 7-6(9), 6-3. Of the top eight seeds, only Elena Rybakina and Aryna Sabalenka, the top two, are missing from the last 16.
