Coco Gauff vs Xinran Sun — R32 — China Open

Third seed Coco Gauff, the 2024 champion, reached the China Open round of 16 by ending the run of Xinran Sun. Ranked 582nd, the Chinese player had won two rounds in Beijing, the first when Eva Lys retired down 6-1, 3-0 and the second in straight sets against Cristina Bucsa. The first set was decided late. Gauff broke for 2-1, Sun broke straight back for 2-2, and the set then went with serve until Gauff broke for 6-5 in the 11th game. She took the set a game later. Sun did not win another service game. Gauff broke her four times in the second set, and Sun's only game there came on Gauff's serve, for 1-3. When her first serve went in, Sun won 64% of points, slightly better than Gauff's 61%. She landed only 51% of first serves, though, and won just 8 of 32 points behind her second. Gauff won 14 of 22 behind hers.
