A 1-4 stretch across her last five has defined a grinding stretch for Hanne Vandewinkel, who sits at WTA No. 100 with little margin at the slam-and-500 level. The exception came at the Rosmalen Open, where she dropped the opener to Nikola Bartunkova then reeled off a 6-4 7-6(5) 7-5 turnaround — her only completed three-setter of the run — before Barbora Krejcikova ended it in the round of 16. The rougher data points: straight-sets losses to Madison Keys at the French Open, including a 6-0 second set, and to Panna Udvardy in Morocco.

Hanne Vandewinkel is the rare top-100 player who got there by exhausting every rung beneath it. The Belgian, born May 21, 2004, turned pro in 2021 and made her professional debut at an ITF/W25 in Koksijde on home soil that August. She grew up in Zutendaal, Limburg, and trained at the Wilson Luxilon Tenkie Academy in Hasselt. Rather than fast-track onto the main tour, she banked titles in obscurity: three W15 wins at Monastir in 2022, two more ITF titles in 2023, and three again in 2024.
The 5-foot-10 right-hander is a clay-bred baseliner whose ledger argues the opposite. At Challenger/ITF level she's 105-31 (77.2%) on hard versus 96-52 (64.9%) on clay, and 11 of her 13 ITF/Challenger titles came on hard. The serve is a setup tool, not a hammer — she averages around 2.4 aces per match — so the watchable part is the grind: deep, repeatable ball-striking that wins the attrition matches the lower tiers are built on.
The breakthrough came in 2025. She won her first WTA 125 title at Tampico, added an ITF/W50 in La Marsa, played qualifying at all four Grand Slams plus Indian Wells for the first time, and reached a then-career-high No. 122 in November. The signature scalp arrived this spring: at the April 2026 Billie Jean King Cup qualifier against the United States, she beat world No. 16 Iva Jovic in the opening singles rubber.
She enters this stretch off a career-high of No. 92 in singles, reached on April 20, 2026, having broken into the top 100 ahead of the European clay run through Roland-Garros. For a player who built everything from W15 prize-money checks up, the task now is simpler to state than to solve: hold a tour-level baseline rather than re-enter the qualifying grind.
