Suzan Lamens and Solana Sierra: Suzan Lamens leads 1–0 across 1 recorded meeting.
Suzan Lamens, ranked WTA No. 182, beat third-seeded Solana Sierra 6-3, 6-2 in 71 minutes to reach the quarterfinals of the SP Open, the WTA 250 on São Paulo's hard courts. The betting market had made Sierra a narrow favorite at 55 percent. Lamens broke early in both sets, in game two of the first and game one of the second. Sierra broke back each time, in game five and then game four, and lost her serve again in the following game on both occasions. She held only three of her eight service games and won 51 percent of the points behind her first serve. Lamens, 27, came to Brazil having lost her five previous matches on record, her ranking down from WTA No. 97 at the season's start, and she needed a deciding set and a second-set tiebreak to get past Carolina Alves in the opening round. Sierra, the 22-year-old Argentine at WTA No. 90, had lost her first match at both the Canadian Open and the US Open, and needed three sets against Cadence Brace here. The two had no prior meetings on record. It is Lamens' first quarterfinal on record since last September's Korea Open, where she beat Diana Shnaider before losing to Katerina Siniakova.
