Martin Damm needed 73 minutes to get past qualifier Shintaro Mochizuki in the round of 32 at the Chengdu Open, losing serve once. Damm broke for 3-1 and again for 5-1 in a one-sided opening set, winning 80 percent of his first-serve points. Mochizuki drew level in the second, breaking back for 3-3, but Damm broke in game 7 for 4-3 and closed out the match after Mochizuki saved a match point. Damm converted four of six break points; Mochizuki one of five. The 22-year-old American hit 12 aces, close to his season rate of 11.5 per match. Ranked ATP No. 106 after starting the year at No. 173, he beat Daniil Medvedev at the Winston-Salem Open last month. Mochizuki, ATP No. 125, reached the Wimbledon round of 16 in July.
