Fourth seed Anna Blinkova reached the quarterfinals at the SP Open, beating Vendula Valdmannova 6-3, 6-0 in 74 minutes on the São Paulo hard courts. Serve counted for little in the opening set, which contained eight breaks. Three came against Blinkova, and they were the only games Valdmannova won all match. The 18-year-old Czech lost all seven of her service games, and five of her nine double faults came in the second set, where Blinkova broke in game 2 for 2-0 and again in game 4 for 4-0. Valdmannova did save two match points. Ranked WTA No. 153 and up from No. 313 at the start of the season, Valdmannova had recovered from a set down against Laura Pigossi in her opener. Blinkova had lost three of her previous four matches before this week.
