Vendula Valdmannova vs Laura Pigossi — R32 — SP Open

Vendula Valdmannova lost the opening set 2-6 and then won 12 of the next 14 games to beat Laura Pigossi in the round of 32 at the SP Open, the WTA 250 on São Paulo's hard courts. The 18-year-old Czech came in at WTA No. 165, up from No. 313 at the start of the season, and the betting market had favored her at 74%. Pigossi led the first set from the start, breaking in game 1 and again in game 3 for a 3-0 lead before a third break finished it. Valdmannova did not earn a break point in that set. The second set ran the other way. Valdmannova broke in game 4 for 3-1 and twice more to close it out, while Pigossi's four break chances in the set all went unconverted. In the third, Valdmannova broke in the opening game and again in game 3 for 3-0. The widest gap in the numbers came behind the second serve: Valdmannova won 59% of those points to Pigossi's 36%. Pigossi also double-faulted six times, three in each of the last two sets, after none in the first. Pigossi, born in São Paulo and ranked WTA No. 193 at match time, is out of her home event after 2h 11m on court.
