·500·HardSloane Stephens defeated Janice Tjen 7(7)-6(4), 7(7)-6(3) — Guadalajara Open 2026 R16.
Sloane Stephens and Janice Tjen: Sloane Stephens leads 1–0 across 1 recorded meeting.
Sloane Stephens is into the Guadalajara Open quarterfinals after two tiebreak sets against fifth seed Janice Tjen, a round-of-16 match at the WTA 500 event that took 2 hours 33 minutes. The betting market had made Tjen, the Indonesian ranked WTA No. 51, a 55 percent favorite. Neither serve was broken in the opening set, and seven of Tjen's 11 aces came in it. Stephens earned the set's only break point and could not convert it; a tiebreak settled the set. The second set finally produced breaks, and the first two belonged to Tjen, who moved ahead 5-2. Stephens broke straight back in game 8, broke again in game 10 to level at 5-5, and the set went to another tiebreak. Tjen saved a match point before it ended. The totals stayed level almost everywhere: both players held 10 of their 12 service games, and Stephens took 81 of the 155 points. The second serve was the exception. Stephens won 15 of 22 points against Tjen's second delivery, while Tjen managed six of 17 against hers. Tjen double-faulted five times, four of them in the second set. Stephens, 33, began 2026 ranked WTA No. 1098 and reached this round at her season peak of No. 169, two days after a round-of-32 win over Carole Monnet.
