Sloane Stephens opened the Guadalajara Open with a 6-4, 7-6(5) win over French qualifier Carole Monnet, a first-round match of 1 hour 43 minutes in which the 160 points were split 80-80. Neither serve settled. Stephens broke four times in 11 return games, Monnet three, and the second set changed hands four times: Monnet broke in the opening game, Stephens levelled at 2-2, Monnet moved ahead at 3-2, and Stephens broke back for 3-3 before the tiebreak. Monnet saved one match point. The first set ran along similar lines. Stephens broke in game 2 for a 2-0 lead, Monnet retrieved one break in game 9, and Stephens still took it 6-4. Stephens, a wild card at WTA No. 169, was playing her first match since a second-round loss to Marta Kostyuk at the US Open. Monnet, a 24-year-old left-hander ranked WTA No. 215, came through qualifying at the WTA 500 event.
