Peyton Stearns, ranked WTA No. 60, is into the Guadalajara Open final after beating eighth seed Liudmila Samsonova in two sets in a semifinal lasting 2 hours 11 minutes. Samsonova broke in games 1 and 3 of the opening set for a 3-0 lead and was still in front when Stearns broke back in game 8 for 3-5. The set went to a tiebreak, which Stearns took 9-7. Stearns broke again in games 3 and 7 of the second set, in which Samsonova served five of her eight double faults. Stearns had nine break points in the first set alone and converted three. Samsonova took the higher share of her chances over the match, three of five against Stearns's five of 12, but she had far fewer of them. The two had no prior meetings on record. Stearns has yet to drop a set in Guadalajara, having come through Emiliana Arango, Diane Parry and Sloane Stephens, whom she beat in the quarterfinals.
