Xiaodi You vs Alina Charaeva — R32 — SP Open

Eighth seed Alina Charaeva lost the opening set to qualifier Xiaodi You and recovered to win in three in the Round of 32 at the SP Open, the WTA 250 in São Paulo. Serve offered little protection for two sets. Six games went against serve in the first and eight more in the second, which You lost 6-7(5) despite converting four of the ten break points she created in it. Sixteen games were broken in all, eight against each player, and between them the two hit 18 double faults. The third set was the first stretch that resembled ordinary service tennis: both won close to 80 percent of their first-serve points, and You did not reach a break point. Charaeva broke in game 5 for 3-2 and broke again in game 9 to finish it. The totals came out a single point apart, You winning 101 of the 201 played. Ranked WTA No. 207 and 30 years old, she had come through qualifying, and the two had no prior meetings on record. Charaeva, 24 and ranked WTA No. 133, had done this twice in July at the Hamburg Open, where she recovered from a set down in consecutive rounds before losing in the quarterfinals.
