Eighth-seeded Alina Charaeva reached the SP Open quarterfinals in straight sets, beating Elina Avanesyan, who held only three of her eight service games. Charaeva broke in game 2 of the opening set and again in game 6 for 5-1. Avanesyan broke back in game 7, then dropped serve again as Charaeva closed out the set. The second set took a similar shape: Charaeva broke for 3-1, double-faulted five times across the set and lost her own serve in game 7, then broke again in game 8 for 5-3 and served it out. Avanesyan won five of her 20 second-serve points; Charaeva won 58 percent of hers. Charaeva, WTA No. 133, is into her first quarterfinal since Hamburg in July. The two had no prior meetings on record. Avanesyan, WTA No. 155, turned 24 on the day of the match.
