Mary Stoiana beat Claire Liu in straight sets in the round of 32 at the SP Open, her first win in six tour-level matches on record. Stoiana, WTA No. 122, had lost the five before it, four of them on hard courts this season. Serve was close to optional in the opening set. Stoiana converted four of her seven break points and Liu three of five, and the set went 6-3 to Stoiana. Liu, WTA No. 111 and a 55 percent favorite with the betting market, double-faulted eight times across the match and won 40 percent of her return games to Stoiana's 60 percent. The second set ran through three more breaks. Stoiana moved ahead in game five for 3-2, Liu broke back in game eight for 4-4, and Stoiana broke again in game 11 for 6-5. Liu saved one match point before Stoiana closed out the win in 1 hour 53 minutes. Liu's last win on record came at Wimbledon, where she reached the third round.
