Mary Stoiana reached the quarterfinals of the SP Open, the WTA 250 in São Paulo, beating Dominika Salkova in two sets in 1h 28m. The opening set carried six breaks of serve. Stoiana broke for 4-2 and again for 5-3, lost her serve in game nine to let Salkova back to 4-5, then took the tiebreak for 7-6(5). In the second set, Stoiana broke in the first and third games, and Salkova took just one game. Salkova, the 22-year-old Czech ranked WTA No. 125, converted three of four break points in the first set and had none in the second. Stoiana won 60% of her return games to Salkova's 33%, including 20 of the 33 points she played against the Salkova second serve. Stoiana, 23, sits at a season-best WTA No. 116 after starting the year at No. 223, and she had lost five straight matches before beating Claire Liu in the round of 32. Salkova had opened her week with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Jessica Bouzas Maneiro.
