Taylah Preston reached the second round of the WTA 1000 China Open with a straight-sets win over Tamara Korpatsch, although the second set needed a tiebreak. The betting market made the 20-year-old Australian a 66 percent favorite, even though she was ranked 94th and Korpatsch 51st. Preston began the season ranked 205th and came to Beijing off a Korea Open quarterfinal run in which she beat Jelena Ostapenko. The first set was one-sided. Preston broke in the first and third games for a 3-0 lead and did not face a break point in the set. The second set was closer: Preston broke for 2-1 and again for 4-3, and both times Korpatsch broke back in the next game. Korpatsch saved two match points before Preston won the tiebreak 7-4. Across the match, Preston won 65 percent of her second-serve points and Korpatsch 48 percent. Korpatsch, who won her hometown Hamburg Open in July, has now lost four of her five matches since.
