Leylah Fernandez, the No. 6 seed, beat qualifier Kyoka Okamura 6-2, 6-3 in the round of 32 on the opening day of the WTA 250 Singapore Tennis Open. Both sets followed the same sequence. Fernandez broke for 3-1 in the first, Okamura broke back immediately, and Fernandez broke again in game 6 for 4-2. In the second, Fernandez led 2-0, was pegged back in game 3, then broke for 3-1. Okamura, ranked WTA No. 307, held three of her eight service games. Fernandez's serve was not clean: seven double faults, five of them in the second set. She also converted only five of the 22 break points she earned, and Okamura saved three match points. Fernandez arrived in Singapore 8-12 on hard courts this season, her last hard-court match a US Open loss to Jessica Pegula.
