Polina Kudermetova and Elina Svitolina: Elina Svitolina leads 1–0 across 1 recorded meeting.
The difference was taking return chances. Elina Svitolina converted 4 of 8 break points to Kudermetova's 3 of 9 and won 70 percent of second-serve return points to the qualifier's 56, separation enough after an opening set of six breaks that needed a tiebreak. A break in game 5 of the second, for 3-2, settled it; the No. 2 seed closed in 1 hour, 27 minutes, Kudermetova saving one match point. A Washington Open quarterfinal with Alexandra Eala, No. 29, is next.
