Broken in game 7 of the third for 4-3, Tsitsipas answered immediately in game 8 for 4-4, the only one of eight break points he converted in that set, and closed it out in the breaker. The opener had been his own mess, 16 unforced errors to six. The recovery ran on volume rather than precision, the 28-year-old Greek manufacturing 17 break chances to four and striking 57 winners to 37 while holding 18 of 20 service games. Harris fought off 12 of those 17 and still finished eight points behind on the day. Three hours and 26 minutes later Tsitsipas is into the last 32, having now dropped the opening set in back-to-back matches at the US Open and won both — some life yet in a 10-11 hard-court season.
