Aryna Sabalenka and Ann Li: Aryna Sabalenka leads 2–1 across 3 recorded meetings.
Ann Li ousted top seed Aryna Sabalenka from the Wuhan Open in the round of 32, winning the deciding set 7-6(5) after Sabalenka saved nine match points. The betting market had made Sabalenka, the WTA No. 2, an 81% favorite against Li, who was WTA No. 30. Li had also lost both of their previous meetings on record, most recently a 7-6, 6-4 defeat at the Miami Open in March. Sabalenka won a first set in which she broke serve twice. Li broke back for 3-4, but Sabalenka broke again in the next game to lead 5-3. Sabalenka also broke first in the second set, for 3-2. Li then broke her twice, levelling at 4-4 and breaking again in game 10 to take the set. In the third set, Li broke for 3-1 and kept that lead until game 9, when Sabalenka broke to trail 4-5 and forced the set to a tiebreak. Li converted just 4 of 17 break points over the match, but her serve held up in the decider. She hit five of her eight aces there and won 87% of her first-serve points, along with 20 winners in the set. Sabalenka finished with 44 unforced errors to Li's 28. Li will next face Janice Tjen, WTA No. 49.
