Xinyu Wang reached the Singapore Tennis Open quarterfinals by breaking Joanna Garland's serve late in each set. Garland, the WTA No. 168 from Chinese Taipei, struck first, breaking in game 2 of the opening set for a 2-0 lead. Wang broke back in game 7 and then closed the set with breaks in games 11 and 12. The second set turned on a single opportunity. Wang earned one break point in it and converted, taking game 9 for 5-4 before serving out the match in 1h 36m. Garland created two chances of her own and took neither; she finished one of four on break points, Wang three of five. Garland, 25, had come through three sets against Storm Hunter to reach the last 16. Wang, WTA No. 40, dropped three games to Donna Vekic in her opener and came in as the betting market's 71 percent favorite, with no prior meetings on record between the two.
