Fifth seed Adolfo Daniel Vallejo needed 2 hours 48 minutes to get past Jie Cui in the Hangzhou Open round of 32, winning in three sets after Cui had saved five match points. Vallejo, a 22-year-old Paraguayan at ATP No. 58, broke in games 3 and 5 of the opening set and took it 6-1. The second set turned on chances neither man took. There were no breaks of serve, Vallejo went 0-for-5 on break points, and Cui, a Chinese wild card at ATP No. 447, won the tiebreak to level the match. Vallejo broke again in game 7 of the decider for 4-3 and won the set 6-4. Across the match he held all 13 of his service games and saved the four break points Cui earned, while converting four of his own 13 chances. Vallejo came in 3-4 on hard courts this season, a run that included a first-round US Open loss to Gael Monfils. He moves into the round of 16 with his ranking at its season peak, up from ATP No. 143 to start the season.
