Twelfth seed Rafael Jodar reached the Shanghai Masters final with a 6-3, 6-4 semifinal win over fifth seed Daniil Medvedev. The betting market had made Medvedev a 62 percent favorite. Jodar, ATP No. 13, had dropped the opening set in all four of his earlier matches in Shanghai. This was his first straight-sets win of the event. Both sets went the same way. In the first, Jodar broke for 3-1, Medvedev broke back right away, and Jodar broke again for 4-2. In the second, Jodar broke in the opening game, Medvedev drew level at 2-2, and Jodar broke once more for 4-3. Medvedev held only five of his nine service games and hit all four of his double faults in the second set. He saved three match points before Jodar closed it out. At No. 5, Medvedev is Jodar's highest-ranked victim on record. His previous best was Alex de Minaur, then No. 8, in Madrid. The final also betters Jodar's previous best Masters result, a semifinal at the Canadian Open.
