Qualifier Katarzyna Kawa reached the Ningbo Open round of 16 after she came from a set down to beat lucky loser Daria Snigur. Kawa, ranked WTA No. 128, was the underdog: the betting market made Snigur, the WTA No. 40, a 71% favorite. The first set went almost entirely Snigur's way. She broke serve in games 1, 3, 5 and 7, while Kawa made 23 unforced errors and six double faults. From the second set on, Kawa's error count nearly vanished. She made one unforced error in the second set and none in the third, and hit 28 winners across those two sets. Snigur went the other way, with 17 unforced errors in the second set and 16 in the third. The second set opened with three straight breaks, Kawa's in games 1 and 3 putting her ahead 2-1, and she went on to level the match. In the deciding set, Kawa converted two of her three break points and saved five of the six she faced. She also won 80% of her first-serve points in that set. Kawa's second serve stayed a weakness. She finished with 14 double faults and won only 32% of her second-serve points. Behind her first serve, though, she won 70% of points to Snigur's 59%, and she out-hit Snigur 37-12 in winners.
