Mary Stoiana reached the tour by the American college route, and she took the long version of it. Born May 6, 2003 in Southbury, Connecticut, to a father who emigrated from Romania as a child and played college tennis at St. John's, she spent four years at Texas A&M from 2021 through 2025 and left with a 138-20 singles record, including a 47-0 mark in dual matches on the Aggies' home courts.
The résumé she built there is the reference point: the ITA All-American singles title in October 2023, the first Aggie to hold the national No. 1 ranking a month later, SEC Player of the Year in 2023 and 2024, the Honda Sports Award, and Tournament MVP honors when Texas A&M won the program's first NCAA team championship in 2024. At 5-foot-6, right-handed with a two-handed backhand, she is a returner before she is a server, as evidenced by an ace rate of 2.3 percent against 37.3 percent of return points won at tour level in 2026.
Three ITF singles titles followed the turn pro, and the climb has been steep — WTA No. 317 a year ago, a career-high WTA No. 122 in late August 2026, 195 places in twelve months. The US Open brought her Grand Slam main-draw debut, a straight-sets loss to Alexandra Eala.
As of September 2026, the tour-level ledger reads 0-5, and three of those five she led by a set: 7-6(5) on Peyton Stearns in Memphis, 6-2 on Alycia Parks in Charleston, 6-3 on Anastasia Zakharova in Austin. The ITF titles say the level is close. Holding serve 53.3 percent of the time says where the work sits.
Mary Stoiana's latest available published WTA singles ranking is No. 115 as of Oct 6, 2026 with 666 WTA Points.
Mary Stoiana has a 2–6 win-loss record in 2026 across the Grand Slam, Masters/1000, 500 and 250 events covered by The Drop Shot.
Mary Stoiana lost to Paula Badosa 4-6 2-6 in the quarterfinals at the SP Open on Sep 18, 2026. This is the latest result available in the 2026 records.
