Shuai Zhang vs Kayla Day — R128 — Cincinnati Open

Broken back for 3-3 in the third, Zhang took the serve straight back for 4-3, closing out a set in which she won 81 percent of her first-serve points to the qualifier's 44. The opener had run the other way, Day landing three aces and 78 percent behind her first serve while Zhang, whose flat, heavy ball-striking lives on thin margins, converted none of four break chances. Day's first serve stopped holding up. She finished with eight aces to none and five double faults, holding eight of 12 service games to Zhang's 10 and losing the points count 83-74. Three hours and 24 minutes for 24 games, and the veteran draws Ann Li (No. 31) next, a rematch of Li's May win in Paris.
