Katie Volynets needed 66 minutes to beat Elvina Kalieva 6-3, 6-0 in her opening match at the Korea Open, the WTA 250 in Seoul. Ranked WTA No. 77, she had lost her previous three matches on hard courts, her last win on the surface coming at the Memphis Classic in late July. Volynets held all seven of her service games and never faced a break point. She broke for 2-0 in the first set and again in game 9 to take it, then broke in games 1, 3 and 5 of the second. Kalieva, ranked WTA No. 113, reached the Memphis semifinals this summer but came to Seoul having lost four hard-court matches in a row. All four of her double faults came in the first set, and she won 29 percent of her second-serve points for the match, against 83 percent for Volynets.
