Janice Tjen came from a set down to beat Anhelina Kalinina in the first round of the China Open in Beijing. Tjen, an Indonesian ranked 46th, was the barest of favorites in the betting market against the 48th-ranked Ukrainian. The totals from their 2-hour, 41-minute match were just as level: each player won 15 games and broke serve four times. Kalinina won the opening set, breaking for 3-1 in game 4. She converted two of eight break points in that set, while Tjen converted neither of her two. In each of the last two sets, Tjen got the first break, only for Kalinina to break back for 4-4 in game 8. Tjen went ahead again with a break for 6-5 in game 11 of the second set. In the third, she broke straight back for 5-4 and served out the match. Tjen's serve held up better after the opener. Kalinina's break-point chances dropped to four in each of the last two sets, and Tjen's rate of first-serve points won rose from 69 percent in the first set to 83 and then 90 percent. She finished with 12 aces to Kalinina's two. The win lifts Tjen to 10-14 on hard courts this season. Kalinina has risen from 174th at the start of the season, but she has now lost five of her six hard-court matches this year.
