Fifth seed Elina Svitolina reached the Wuhan Open round of 16 by winning in three sets against WTA No. 39 Liudmila Samsonova. Neither player held serve consistently. The match had 15 breaks in 28 games. Svitolina held only eight of her 14 service games, and Samsonova held five of 14. Svitolina won 93 percent of her first-serve points in the opening set and broke three times. The second set went the other way. She broke for 3-1 but converted only two of 10 break points in the set. Samsonova converted all three of her chances to level the match. Samsonova made 20 unforced errors in the third set to Svitolina's three, and 46 in the match to Svitolina's 21. Svitolina broke for 2-0, 3-1 and 5-1. Samsonova broke back twice in the set and saved two match points, but Svitolina broke again in game 8 to finish it. This was their second meeting on record, and Svitolina has won both. In June, she came from a set down to beat Samsonova on grass at the Bad Homburg Open. Her next opponent is Hanyu Guo, ranked 240th.
