Iva Jovic opened her Guadalajara Open title defense with a 7-6(5), 6-4 win over Zeynep Sonmez in the Round of 16, a two-hour, two-minute match she won while taking fewer total points, 76 to 78. The second seed, WTA No. 16, had a first-round bye, so this was her first match at the event she won in 2025. Serve counted for little in the opening set: seven games went against the server, Sonmez double-faulted five times, and a tiebreak settled it. Jovic broke in games 3 and 5 of the second set to lead 4-1; Sonmez broke straight back in game 6 and later saved two match points before the set ended. Sonmez, at WTA No. 58, had conceded two games in her opening win over Iryna Shymanovich, and the two had no prior meetings on record.
