MastersHard·Final·1h 47mJelena Ostapenko defeated Diana Shnaider 7(8)-6(6), 6-1 — Wuhan Open 2026 Quarterfinal.
Diana Shnaider and Jelena Ostapenko: Jelena Ostapenko leads 1–0 across 1 recorded meeting.
Jelena Ostapenko is through to the Wuhan Open semifinals after she beat 11th seed Diana Shnaider in straight sets. The betting market had made Shnaider, the WTA No. 14, a 66 percent favorite over the WTA No. 32, so Ostapenko's win was an upset. Shnaider led early, breaking in game 6 of the opening set for a 4-2 lead. Ostapenko broke back in game 9 and then won the tiebreak 8-6. The second set was one-sided. Ostapenko broke in games 2 and 6, and Shnaider did not earn a break point in that set. Shnaider saved one match point before the match ended after 1 hour, 45 minutes. Ostapenko played with far more risk, finishing with 29 winners and 28 unforced errors to Shnaider's eight and 14. Shnaider's second serve was the clearest weakness. She won only 35 percent of those points, while Ostapenko took 15 of 23 when returning them. Shnaider saved six of the nine break points she faced but converted only one of her two chances. The quarterfinal was Ostapenko's first straight-sets win since her 6-1, 6-1 opener against Daria Kasatkina. She came from a set down to beat Jessica Pegula. She then needed three sets to get past Leylah Fernandez.
