Darja Semenistaja ended a four-match losing run at the SP Open, beating lucky loser Hayu Kinoshita 7-5, 6-4 in the round of 32. The ninth seed, ranked WTA No. 120, had lost four in a row since her April 1 win at the Copa Colsanitas, most recently in the first round of the US Open. Both players were broken in each set. Semenistaja broke in game 3 of the opening set, Kinoshita broke back in game 8 for 4-4, and Semenistaja then broke in games 11 and 12 to take it. Kinoshita led the second set after breaking in game 2, only to be broken back in game 3 and again in game 7 for 4-3. Kinoshita, a 19-year-old from Japan who began the season at WTA No. 488 and has since reached a season-high No. 210, generated eight break points to Semenistaja's seven and converted two. She saved a match point before the Latvian finished it in 1 hour 52 minutes.
